The practical solution to healthy home heat...
Masonry heaters offer many advantages over traditional wood stoves. By charging a thermal mass of brick, stone or earth like a battery, these wood-fired furnaces slowly discharge heat for hours after the fire is gone. The designs of these systems always burn the wood cleanly and completely, allowing the builder to snake the smokeless gas channels into a maze of twists and turns. By doing so, the channels ensure that heat stays in the stove longer and is not wastefully directed straight up the chimney. The resulting heat is a gentle but pervasive one, cozy enough to sit on or lean against but strong enough to rely on even in the coldest of climates. Small 'cabin' style stoves can be built to heat small spaces and can help keep the operator from losing sleep to refuel in the night. Larger systems can heat entire homes if well designed and placed.

"If one has cut, split, hauled, and piled his own good oak, and let his mind work the while, he will remember much about where the heat comes from, and with a wealth of detail denied to those who spend the weekend in town astride a radiator."
