Quick to heat...
Barrel Ovens were popularized in South America for their simplicity and ease of construction. They can be resourcefully assembled with rustic, scavenged materials, or can be outfitted with newly crafted hardware designed specifically with oven use in mind. The indepence of being able to use firewood for cooking liberates the owner from needing gas or electricity to bake. The metal body radiates heat quickly, while the outer brick shell retains heat for lower temperature baking after the fire has extinguished. Pre-heat times can be as little as 10-15 minutes which makes them a practical choice for spontaneous baking sessions. Well designed combustion chambers below the oven body can provide clean combustion, making for smokeless chimneys and efficient burns where every last BTU in the firewood is converted to heat rather than wasted up in smoke. |
A barrel oven we built at OLCERI on the Pine Ridge Reservation to highlight independence from fossil fuels and demonstrate efficient systems able to be sourced from local materials. If you think to ask us in person some time, there is a wild story of a tornado that descended on us during the first curing fire of this oven.
